“Through celebrations in their seasons are the deeper powers of human nature realized.”
~Rudolf Steiner
The Autumn equinox marks the transition  from Summer to Fall when the amount of light in our day changes. All of the animals and everything in the natural world take their cue and begin to prepare for a long winter sleep. During this time, we are invited to kindle the light within to illuminate our way through the longer nights.
“It is a time of conscious selfhood, a time when we celebrate the building and strengthening of our inner life.
In many cultures, the autumn time marks the beginning of a new year. The forces of nature are transiting with the autumnal equinox, as the relationship of light and darkness changes in the world around us.”
(Karen Rivers)
Our ancestors spent more time outdoors than we do and as a result they were more connected to the natural rhythms of nature and the shifts of light. Monuments like the Intihuatana stone in Machu Picchu, Stonehenge, the great Pyramids, the Sphinx, the Moai of Easter Island, or Chichen Itza where all created to align with the Equinoxes or other celestial events.
During this time and in the month of September, there are numerous festivals in most of the worlds religions and cultures which ritualistically symbolize the transition that we all undergo during this time. Through these various festivals, holidays and celebrations, we get to align with the changes that nature is experiencing and we become unified with the breath and pulse of the cosmos.
This transition into Autumn, when the light is diminishing, is calling us to align with the changes occurring in the natural world and kindle our inner light of wisdom and courage. Through our strength of will and singularity of focus we can bring our light to illuminate times of darkness. All of nature is heading the call to go within and find the illumination inside.
It is time to enjoy the blessings of the harvest and to abide in gratitude for the abundance the harvest has brought. How are you celebrating this beautiful transition?
